(Update) Sewol Ferry Salvage Work Begins Over Two Years Later
An operation has begun to lift the bow of the Sewol ferry that sank over two years ago. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries launched the operation today, aiming to complete it by Wednesday. If the lifting operation proceeds smoothly, beams and wires will be attached to raise the boat above the surface of the water. Once salvaged, the ship will be moved to the port in Mokpo, where search operations for remains of the missing victims will begin.¡á



(Update) 20th National Assembly To Kick Off With Pres Park's Opening Speech
The 20th National Assembly will officially kick off with tomorrow's opening ceremony. President Park Geun-hye will attend the session to give the opening speech, in which she is expected to stress the importance of governance between the administration and the assembly. It is unclear whether the president will address current issues such as corporate restructuring in her speech, as opposition parties have urged her to do. Park is also expected to converse with party leaders at the ceremony.¡á




(Report) Parties Nominate Candidates For Head Of Standing Commitees
(Anchor) Political parties have nominated candidates for the heads of standing committees of the 20th National Assembly. The Minjoo has nominated Kim Hyun-mi to head the National Assembly's budget committee. If approved, she would be the first female lawmaker to hold the position. Liyah Kim has more. (Reporter) The Minjoo has announced its nomination for its 8 standing committee heads. Including three-term lawmaker Kim Hyun-mi, the first woman candidate for the head of the budget committee, the Minjoo nominated its lawmakers to head the committees of health, transportation, foreign affairs, ethics, environment, family affairs, and agriculture. The nominees will be confirmed after being put to a vote in tomorrow's parliamentary session. Meanwhile, the Saenuri Party has also registered 17 candidates for its 8 assigned committee head seats in the National Assembly. According to a party official, multiple candidates registered for five positions overseeing committees on legislation, state affairs, planning, science, and safety. Solo nominees for three other committees are all but confirmed, including Jeong Jin-seok who was tapped to head the managing committee, as is customary for the floor leader of the ruling party. (Update) Prosecutors Summon Lotte Officials Over Embezzlement, Malpractice
Prosecutors are making strides in their investigation into retail giant Lotte Group over allegations of embezzlement and malpractice. Following a series of raids into Lotte offices and homes of its executives, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office began summoning Lotte officials yesterday. Meanwhile, Lotte founder Shin Kyuk-ho's two sons are likely to face off again later this month over the control of Lotte Group at the shareholder's meeting in Tokyo. ¡á




Traffic on the nation's major highways bound for Seoul are backed up on this Sunday evening. The Korea Expressway Corporation said cars are bumper to bumper on the Gyeongbu Expressway from the Cheongju intersection to Cheongju interchange, and from Yangjae to the Seocho interchange. Over on the Youngdong Expressway for Seoul, there is a long stretch of jammed up traffic from the Jinbu (ÁøºÎ)interchange to the Pyeongchang (Æòâ)interchange. Meanwhile, there are no major delays on the Seohaeahn (¼­ÇؾÈ) Expressway at this hour.¡á
