Part 1-1:
Opening

Happy New Year, it's officially 2015, we wish you a wonderful one here at tbs eFM.

2014 was overwhelmingly heartbreaking at times, at home and abroad, have lessons been learned to ensure a more peaceful new year?

For loved ones directly affected by last year's heartbreak, last year may never truly end, and we also remember them this morning.

Among them, loved ones of crew members of a sunken Korean fishing vessel off Russia's Far East, the search operation has officially ended in the last few hours - with 26 still missing...

But as I suggested, 2015 is an opportunity, in big and small ways!

The passing of the year is a reminder that time waits for no one - and on today's show, we'll offer tips on how to save more of it, time that is! Perhaps that can be one of your resolutions! Plus, we'll be asking: where's the economy headed?

I'm Alex Jensen, and welcome to "This Morning" Thursday January 1st brought to you this half-hour by...

Part 1-2:
Headlines

Good morning, here's what's coming up in our domestic news briefing¡¦

1 President Park's new year message - what did she have to say?

2 A closer look at what actually happened in last week's fatal nuclear plant accident...

3 A resolution to a major workers' dispute, at least for now...

Domestic News Briefing : Eugene Kwon, Freelance Reporter

1. It's the beginning of a new year, and President Park has a few things to say about what her administration wants to achieve in the year 2015. Let's cover what she said yesterday. What did she say yesterday, Eugene?

PP's new year message captured her commitment to make broad efforts on economic, social and political grounds. The message was released via a video message uploaded on YouTube and also her social network website.
First on the political level, President Park Geun-hye pledged to lay the groundwork for potential unification in the new year amid continuing tensions on the Korean Peninsula. In her message, PP said that she will make efforts to (quote) "open the path toward unification by laying substantial and specific groundwork for unification by ending a seven-decades-long division." To emphasize her commitment to reunification, she mentioned a key phrase-'reunification bonanza,' something that became symbolic of her administration's efforts to improve inter-Korean relations.
Despite PP's optimistic message, political circumstances between the South and the North remain unclear. PP's comments came two days after South Korea proposed that the two Koreas hold ministerial talks this month to discuss bilateral issues including the reunion of families separated by the Korean War. As of now, the North remains silent on PP admin's fresh offer to make preparations for reunification. So we'll have to wait and see if things will turn for the better in the year 2015.

President Park said she will work to revitalize the economy in her message. What did she say? What plans does she and her administration have?
In PP's message, she said that her administration will focus on economic recovery, an urgent task that must be taken on in order to improve the nation. She stated that in order to breathe new life into the economy, the govt will aim to start an era in which the country's national income stands at 40-thousand dollars by having the economy based on creativity and innovation.
What's interesting about her speech is the phrase she used to emphasize revitalizing the economy. A direct translation of this phrase is breathing life into (quote) "the flame of economic recovery." This phrase is different from a previous phrase her administration has been using, which is (quote) "rekindling the fire of the country's economy." Pundits have been reading PP's usage of the new phrase ("the flame of economic recovery") as her display of confidence in having achieve some level of economic recovery in the year 2014 despite several domestic problems and crises, including the Sewol Ferry accident, the memo-gate scandal and numerous others.

President Park also touched upon how the government will aim to strengthen the social integrity of this country. One cannot help but think of the aftermath of the Sewol tragedy when taking this in. What did she say?
PP said that in order to build a clean, safe and credible society, the government will thoroughly pursue efforts on eliminating (quote) deep-seated evils in this society, referring to April's Sewol ferry tragedy.
(Certainly, the shadow of Sewol ferry tragedy linger in this country, something which PP is determined to lift off and resolve.)
Memorably, PP's speech ended with a saying that roads are built when we come across mountains and bridges are built when we come across waters. It's interpreted that with the saying, she displayed her commitment to overcome potential hardships during the year 2015.

2. Next, an investigation will be carried out on the nitrogen gas leak accident that killed three workers in Ulsan last week. Guide us through an update on this.
Last week, a gas-leak accident occurred at the ½Å°í¸® No. 3 reactor of state-run utility Korea Electric Power Corp in Ulsan southeast of Seoul. The aftermath investigation will focus on whether the company responsible for manufacturing valves used at the reactor supplied poor quality valves. Company irregularities and corruption have led to accidents and tragedies before in this country, so consequences will be dire if it turns out to be true that the company supplied poor products to the reactor.
What is the police planning to do during its investigation?
The Ulsan-Ulju police station is reportedly planning to have the company, whose name remains anonymous, to submit monitoring reports and quality insurance documents on the valves that it provided to the reactor
Apparently, this company seems to have had committed irregularities before, which makes all of this concerning. Is that right?
Unfortunately, it appears so. The company, back in 2012, was registered as an 'inappropriate company' after making false quality insurance document for valves supplied to ÇÑ¿ï No. 1 reactor in northern °æ»ó province. Not only that, the company last year was found out to have doctored monitoring reports for valves used in ½Å°í¸® No. 3 reactor, the same reactor where 3 workers were killed due to the gas leak.

Needless to say, the company has a tainted history, and we'll have to wait and see whether the company was responsible for the gas leak.

3. A temporary agreement is reached between Hyundai Heavy Industries and its labor union. That's happy news for a new year. What does the agreement consist of?
The agreement concerns the basic income of workers at the Hyundai Heavy Industries, giving incentives to employees, special holidays for workers among others proposals. According to the agreement, the workers' basic income will increase 2% or by 37,000 won per month. Workers will also receive an additional amount of extra pay and other types of stipends as well.
Members of the union will vote next week regarding this tentative agreement. The union and management have also decided to form a committee responsible for negotiating wage issues in the future.

The company, unlike Hyundai Motors, had no labor disputes for the past few decades apparently. But that changed last year in May. How long has the recent stand-off been continuing?

It's been continuing for roughly 7 months since May last year. The reason that this is big news is that the company, reputed for never having failed to hash out wage agreements every year, is now recovering its deteriorated relationship with the labor union. The two parties had engaged in negotiations more than 70 times over the last 7 months, and the union had conducted four partial strikes since late November, the first time for the union to carry out strikes in 20 years. Reportedly, the labor union was able to reach an agreement with the company after accepting the company's proposals, and the company also accepting some of the requests made by the union. The move by the labor union is seen as accepting the company's sincere appeal to overcome its difficult situation with its competitiveness. As of recently, The company had been suffering from a serious crisis, losing roughly 3.2 trillion won in the first 3 quarters during last year.

4. Lastly, controversy over the Lotte World Mall as yet another problem found within the building. Last time, problems with the movie theater and the aquarium made people worried. What's the problem now?

Apparently, a crack on the floor in the underground parking lot is causing concern yet again with the Lotte World Mall located in Songpa district in Seoul. A Lotte group official said that fine cracks were found on floors from second to sixth floors. The official explained that such fine cracks are bound to be found on any type of concrete material. The official further said that additional construction has been under way to cover up the cracks starting mid-December last year (or in the year 2014).

Despite Lotte official's statements, many people remain concerned, of course. What are people worried about and what do experts say about this?
People are worried that perhaps the cracks have been brought about due to instability with the ground nearby the ¼®ÃÌ lake-it's by this lake that the Lotte World Mall is located.

Against such concerns, ÇÑõ±¸, who's the chair of the Korea Institute of Building Construction, said that such fine cracks always appears above concrete-material parts due to drying and contraction process of cement.

International News: Emilee Jennings, Freelance Reporter

Almost 1,000 migrants have been rescued from The Blue Sky M cargo ship found adrift in Greek waters. After Italian coastguards brought it under control and safely docked it at the Italian port of Gallipoli.
Ambulance crews stood waiting as the ship - carrying 970 people - docked in the early hours of New Year's Eve.
The migrants, believed to be mainly Syrians and Kurds, have been taken to local schools and gymnasiums.
Thirty-five of them were taken to hospital, with some treated for hypothermia,
The Italian Red Cross had previously said that four people were found dead on the ship.
But it later withdrew its report, and officials now say no-one is known to have died on the ship.
The Blue Sky M was abandoned and left on autopilot by its crew
The crew are believed to be people traffickers.
And Their location is still unknown
People traffickers who organise the crossings often abandon the vessels at sea to avoid arrest

As you mentioned the crew are thought to be people smugglers who took money from those in need of refuge and It has also emerged that the ship was not safe for travel. Clearly no regard for human life shown here
the smugglers left the ship's controls on autopilot and then abandoned it leaving the passengers for dead
The migrants inside the boat said they did not know what was going on.
There are reports that these passengers - who were treated so inhumanly - paid thousands of dollars to the smugglers to bring them to Europe.
The safety manager of a company hired to provide a safety certification for the ship said he had withdrawn its certificate several months earlier after finding it unsafe.
He emphasized that he was not the owner of the ship
And told authorities who he thinks is involved

The Blue Sky was listed as a general cargo ship, flying under a Moldovan flag.
The coastguard boarded the ship, averting a huge disaster by interrupting the programmed route that would have had the ship crash into the Italian coast
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has formally launched a bid to join the International Criminal Court. It's been a bloody year for Palestinians and Israelis - the war in Gaza, kidnappings, and murders in Jerusalem. What does this mean for Palistine?
President Abbas signed the Rome Statute, the ICC's founding treaty, at a Ramallah meeting just a few hours ago.
Membership could see the Palestinians pursue Israel on war crime charges
Israel's prime minister condemned the signing saying Israel would take "steps in response and defend Israel's soldiers".
The move follows the rejection of a UN Security Council resolution demanding an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories by late 2017.
Eight members of the 15-strong Security Council voted for that resolution, while the US and Australia voted against.
It needed the support of at least nine members in order to pass.
The Rome Statue was among some 20 international agreements signed by Mr Abbas at the meeting in Ramallah, in the West Bank.
Signing up to the statute is seen as the first move to joining the ICC.
Israel says joining the court would also expose the Palestinians to prosecution.
Palestinian chances of joining the ICC were improved in 2012 after the UN General Assembly voted to upgrade their status to that of a "non-member observer state" in November of that year.
Membership is not guaranteed but the application is a highly political move that carries great symbolism.
The ICC can prosecute individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed since 1 July 2002, when the Rome Statute came into force.

AirAsia QZ8501: Surabaya vigil held for victims

fjrigjwwe9r1prglist_d1:paragrape
A vigil has been held in the Indonesian city of Surabaya for the victims of the AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crash. The first two bodies from the AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crash have arrived back in the Indonesian city of Surabaya, where relatives are waiting.
Hundreds of residents and relatives of those on board lit candles and observed a minute's silence for the victims.
the first two bodies from the crash were flown back to Surabaya yesterday.
The bodies were in coffins numbered 001 and 002, as they had not yet been identified.
Family members were asked for DNA samples to help identify the victims.
The authorities say seven bodies have been retrieved, but bad weather is hampering further rescue efforts
Four of the seven bodies are male and three female, one of them a flight attendant.
On board the plane were 137 adult passengers, 17 children and one infant, along with two pilots and five crew.
Rescuers believe they found the plane on the ocean floor off Borneo, after detecting a large, dark object beneath waters near where debris and bodies were found on the surface.
The black box flight data and cockpit voice recorder has not yet being found.
It is still not clear what happened to the plane

Now onto some happier news. Revellers across the globe have gathered to welcome the new year, with New Zealand and Australia leading the celebrations.
Millions of people are lining the streets in cities around the World to watch fireworks and countdown the New Year.
Some of the easternmost corners of earth, including Kiribati and the Chatham Islands of New Zealand, were the first places to reach midnight.
New Zealand's Auckland was the first major city to ring in the New year with a huge firework display and music blasting from its iconic Sky Tower
Still some places are yet to welcome 2015
European countries will begin celebrating in about 30 minutes and New Yorkers will watch the city lower its trademark crystal ball over Times Square at 2pm Korean time.
Countries around the world will continue to welcome and celebrate the New Year until 9pm Korean time, so you can keep the party going all day.

Part 2-3:
Special Issue

Introduction
Now, here's a new year's resolution all of us might want to take on board - save more time.

Or at least, avoid "time poverty."

On the line we have Dr. Jan Yager, time management coach in the US...

1. Has individualistic cultures played a role in more people being affected by time poverty?

2. Can the "time-is-money" mindset make matters worse? What is the relations between one's degree of wealth and feeling time-poor?

3. How does time poverty affect one's attitude towards work and their performance?

4. How about in managing free time, when we're enjoying an increase in leisure time compared to the past? For example, here in Korea over the last two years the leisure time for Koreans enjoyed on average during weekdays increased by 0.3 to 3.6 hours and on weekends by 0.7 to 5.1 hours and American men toil for pay nearly 12 hours less per week, on average, than they did 40 years ago.

5. As we go into the new year, what are your advice for us to better deal with the issue in managing our time, particularly in terms of setting priorities

1) at our work place?
2) managing our leisure time?

6. I understand You've come up with a 14-day time management self-improvement program. Can you tell us more about this?
